World-Class Surgical Care Right Here at Home

What is a Pediatric Surgeon?

If your child needs surgical care, there is no one more qualified to provide consultation and operative expertise than a pediatric surgeon.   A pediatric surgeon is a physician who specializes in the care of pediatric patients from the moment of birth until adulthood, and their training and practice focuses exclusively on the care of these unique patients.

To become a pediatric surgeon, a physician must first become a board certified general surgeon by completing an accredited five-year general surgery residency program and passing the written and oral boards exams of the American Board of Surgery.  Many pediatric surgeons have also completed a two-year research fellowship, extending their general surgery residency training to seven years.

After becoming a board certified general surgeon, pediatric surgeons complete a two-year pediatric surgery fellowship, mastering the peri-operative and operative aspects of caring for pediatric patients.   Graduates of a pediatric surgery fellowship must then pass the written pediatric surgery boards exam followed by the oral boards exam of the American Board of Surgery.  At this point, they recieve specialty certification by the American Board of Surgery.
